Functional Medicine

A key element of Anatara Medicine’s Convergence Medicine practice

Optimal health is achieved by being open-minded and acknowledging the necessity of a multi-disciplined approach to health. Convergence Medicine, a term coined by Dr. Ahvie Herskowitz, combines all forms of healthcare, with wisdom dating back thousands of years. Most practitioners of Convergence Medicine focus on determining the cause of imbalance in the body instead of solely addressing the symptoms presented by that imbalance. Balance is then achieved using a myriad of modalities including, but not limited to, botanical/herbal medicine, Chinese medicine, nutraceuticals, acupuncture, homeopathy, physical medicine, intravenous (IV) therapy, nutrition, lifestyle modifications, and pharmaceuticals.

Natural, or naturopathic medicine has its roots in 19th-century Europe and honors the body’s innate wisdom to heal and govern its metabolism, physiology, growth and adaptation. Naturopathic philosophy favors a holistic approach, and seeks to find the least invasive measures necessary for symptom improvement or resolution, encouraging minimal use of unnecessary medications. Thus, prevention through healthy diet, stress reduction and lifestyle is emphasized.

Functional Medicine is an aspect of naturopathic care focused on personalized primary prevention. Much like venerable Chinese disciplines, Functional Medicine looks at the balance of different organ systems, in this case from a biochemical, as well as a bio-energetic standpoint. The biomarkers we collect to track and assess patients’ responses also provide information for Functional Medicine diagnosis.

Anthroposophical Medicine was founded in Europe in the 1920s and is practiced in over 80 countries, primarily Germany, Switzerland and Scandinavia. The system was developed to expand on Western Medicine and to minimize overuse of pharmaceutical medications. It involves physiological archetypes that guide diagnosis as well as patient-specific treatments using homeopathic preparations and herbal botanical extracts. At the core is a movement aimed at connecting humanity to the natural world and to themselves, sharing many philosophical and spiritual principles with ancient medical traditions such as Chinese and Ayurvedic Medicine.

Homeopathic Medicine was developed in the early 1800s based on research by a German physician who found that treating with a dilute substance was curative for the same symptoms the substance produced when used in excess. He postulated that many diseases were the result of a familial influence he called miasm and that influence dictated the way that your body would eliminate toxins. By treating miasm, the body would be able to naturally regulate detoxification systems and more readily come into physiological ease and balance.
